Attraverso i contributi di ricercatori nel campo della storia del pensiero economico, l'opera intende offrire una disamina delle principali tematiche oggetto di indagine di questa disciplina e presentarne lo stato di interpretazione attuale. Nella prima delle due parti in cui risulta suddivisa l'opera sono raccolti interventi che focalizzano l'attenzione su particolari aspetti del pensiero economico proprio, ad esempio, di determinate epoche storiche (come quella antica o medievale), di specifiche scuole (come quella marxista o keynesiana) o frutto di particolari contesti nazionali. La seconda parte, invece, ha per oggetto la storia del pensiero economico come disciplina. In questa parte vengono analizzate alcune delle più significative tematiche storiografiche (dalla sociologia dell'economia e della conoscenza scientifica, all'esegesi, l'ermeneutica e l'interpretazione) e dai contributi in essa raccolti emerge la varietà metodologica della ricerca in questo campo.
